Finding Perspective -- "FAT" Trailer
The trailer of "FAT" a documentary by Vinnie Tortorich, discusses about "the history behind widespread myths and lies regarding healthy eating, fat and weight loss" (Tortorich). The trailer features people from the medical field and health-related associations, the health-related facts they give and their opinions on widespread myths of gaining weight/fat.
PERSPECTIVE
Right in the beginning of Tortorich's trailer, we hear that "[America has only] gotten fatter" showing that the main perspective the trailer has the issue of obesity in America, as a problem that has only regressed and an issue that has gotten worse (Tortorich). The trailer's perspective also places emphasis on how many of us "[has] gotten [fat] completely backwards", meaning that many of us don't understand what fat does in our bodies, how to prevent gaining fat, and other fat-related topics (Teicholz). Tortorich also states that though "the government was complicit and causing [health problems], [he doesn't believe that] they meant to do it", exhibiting that the trailer views the American government in a negative way, though they are aware that the government never meant to harm anyone. But an issue arises from this trailer, as many of the perspectives we hear throughout does not come out of the American government or the majority of American society who are all well involved in this 'fat dilemma'.
BIAS
Bias is present in the trailer, and besides from the trailer not including any perspectives from the American government or the general American society there are other traces of bias. Around halfway in the trailer, we hear Gary Taubes, a featured writer in the trailer, pretend that he's part of the American government and saying that "we're sorry if we killed you're loved ones, but in retrospect we shouldn't have given you the advice we did" (Taubes). This shows bias, as he looks down on the American government and only focuses and articulate the harmful things the American government has done to their citizens and not the great things the government has done.
PURPOSE
In the trailer, Vinnie Tortorich wants to reveal to society that there are hundreds of health-related myths that numerous people believe to be true, as "myths have become ingrained in our society far too strongly for people to realize they're myths" (Scher). Believing that a particular health-related idea or myth is a fact, poses a problem in society as these myths can harm them. Tortorich also raises awareness about the "powerful forces at work in our medical system that [has] nothing to do with good health" -- reveals to the audience that the medical system in our society is wasting their time on projects, or experiments or etc. that won't even help one to progress their health or become healthier (Abrahams). In the trailer Tortorich gives attention to the audience "that we had gotten it completely upside down and backwards on fat", explaining to the audience that many people don't completely understand about fat and our health (Teicholz),. Tortorich also explains that the American government was giving advice to people about something they, themselves, don't fully understand about, causing noticeable damage in their society's health. Gary Taubes, a writer featured in the trailer, says that the "[American government] shouldn't have given the advice [they] did", as the government's advice on health topics have led many people to do pass away (Taubes). At the end of the trailer, Tortorich claims that "it is up to [us] and if [we're] gonna make a change then [we should] start now" giving the audience the advice of not relying on others, such as the government or an industry, on making health-associated changes, but relying on ourselves to do so.
